Friends of Kennicott was founded in 1988, initially to conduct emergency stabilization of Kennecott mine buildings, and later to facilitate acquisition by the National Park Service under a partnership management strategy

Our Mission

Friends of Kennicott assists the National Park Service in managing the Kennecott Mines National Historic Landmark in a way that maintains the character of Kennecott and McCarthy for the visiting public and residents alike.

Current Focus

Today, Friends of Kennicott continues to assist NPS efforts to protect Kennecott’s historical, cultural and natural features while maintaining a vibrant community and advocating for a local/NPS partnership management strategy. We also advocate for a “light touch” management approach to retain the area’s rustic character while maintaining a safe and rewarding experience for residents and visitors alike.
